Rosalia Beetle facts:

The Scientific Name of the Rosalia beetle is Rosalia alpina. Rosalia Beetles are also known as Alpine Longhorn Beetles and are unique looking species with very long antenna. The larvae of the beetle are notorious for drilling large holes in dead wood. They live in the Alps, Slovakia, Germany, Hungary, Poland and Slovenia.

The Rosalia longicorn is 15 to 38 mm long. The antennae can be up to twice as long as the rest of the body in males!. The shield is flat, blue-gray, with variable black spots. Both the antennae and the legs have the same coloration as the body., which gives them a good camouflage with their preferred habitat, the European Beech.

Adult beetles are active from June to September and fly around. By day the beetles sit near flowers and feed on the pollen. They make a chirping sound by scraping their rear legs and coloured shields together.
